The Price of Freedom

In collective cultures, you are born into a community.
In Germany, you have to build one.

A friend said this to me recently.

For her, it was one of the hardest part of arriving here. The biggest culture shock.

Germany is a very individual country.

– I am me.
– I make my own decisions,
– I choose what I like, I decide where I want to go and I pave the path for myself.

So much freedom and so much responsibility.

Because if I make a mistake, it’s on me. I need to know what I want and then build everything around it.

How do you do that best?
Find a hobby, join a club, connect through activities. That’s how many communities start here.

In collective cultures, things are a bit different.

– Often you are born into a religion, a large family network, sometimes even a caste.
– Roles are given, life paths are more defined.

That can feel limiting, but it also gives a lot of security.

Moving from one world into the other can be overwhelming.

No one is judging but often it also feels like no one cares.

Neither is better or worse. They are different.
And preparing for this difference makes all the difference.
